Embroidery PDF pattern ‘Hildegard von Bingen Zodiac Embroidery Circle’
A graphically interpreted pattern from Hildegard von Bingen’s work “Liberscivias,” dated to 1190–1220. The work depicts personified year: the year sits in the center, holding the Sun and the Moon in its hands, while light and darkness kneel before it. In the 2nd circle, in diamonds, are the 4 directions—east, south, west, north. In the 3rd circle, 8 different weather conditions are depicted: it begins with lightning, followed by thunder, intensification, a sudden downpour, dew, daylight, cold, hail. In the 4th circle, allegories are depicted – at the top a woman dawn, a woman holding flowers – good weather, a woman with a cloak – stormy weather, a man – hoarfrost. Between these figures, beginning with the sign of Aries and ending with Pisces, the zodiac signs are arranged in groups of three. The winged nude figures are the winds, and each of them holds in his hand a little ball of his own wind: east – the eastern one, south – the southern one, west – the western one, north – the northern one.
